It is not, as has often happened, the voluntary mummification of a social group (monks, blessed ones, members of illustrious families), but the natural preservation of part of the community buried between the second half of the 16th century and the 17th century.
The discovery took place in the premises of the ancient medieval fortress of Obizzo da Montegarullo, one of the most powerful lords of the Frignano, who rebelled at the end of the 14th century against the rule of the Estensi, later becoming a church and crypt of the Community.
The Church of the Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle, in Roccapelago, is one of the most important buildings for the territory of the Upper Frignano in Modena.
Towards the end of the 16th century, when the military complex was no longer in use, a part of the Fortress was readapted to create a parish church, which over time was modified and expanded.
